Owners of vehicles are required to use Form 2290 for the following purposes:
1. To estimate and pay the tax due to on highway motor vehicles used during a period with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 or more.
2. It can be used to figure out and pay tax for a vehicle for which you completed the suspension statement,
3. To pay tax if the total weight of vehicle increases and category vehicle falls into is altered.
4. To claim exemption from a tax when a vehicle use is expected to be used 5,000 mile or less (For agricultural vehicles 7500 miles or less) during the given period.
5. You can also use this form to request a credit for tax already paid on vehicles which could not be used for being stolen, sold, or destroyed or for being used less than 5,000 miles.
6. You must file this form to report if you acquired a vehicle which is taxable but tax has been suspended.

To successfully complete this form, please ensure that you have following information ready with you.
1. Your employer identification number, Social security numbers cannot be used for this purpose.
2. Vehicle identification number.
3. Total weight of each vehicle which is taxable.

In the corresponding fields, Enter your complete name and complete address.
The amount of tax on the buyer’s use of a vehicle after purchase can be calculated by multiplying the full period’s tax by a fraction
1. The numerator of the fraction is the number of months from the first day of the month after sale date to the end of the tax period.
2. The denominator is equal to the number of the months in the full tax period.
The buyer must do the following:
1. Ensure that the seller has paid tax due on him for the current period.
2. Enter the month after the sale-purchase happened on the line 1.
3. Enter the proportionated tax on the line 2.
This tax on vehicle must be paid in full with your form 2290
