Other color charts can also be used for comparison if desired. There are also mechanical readers which are deemed to be more accurate than manually reading the strip. The following steps below shows how to use the urine color chart.
Step1
Collect fresh urine in a dry clean vessel.
Step2
Get a container containing reagents, remove one of the reagent strip and immediately close the container again to prevent the surrounding air color chart on the strip.
Step3
Drip the area of the strip into the urine and start a timer. Make sure you saturate the strip and wipe the edge of the strip to remove the excess urine.
Step4
You are expected to lay the strip alongside the urine color chart and find the color in the chart matching the strip 60 seconds after the initial dipping.
Step5
When the color that matches the strip and the urine color chart is determined, remove the strip and keep the chart for future use.

When using the urine color chart, it is important to use a good light such as the fluorescent light in order to help you see well. However, note that the fluorescent light can affect both how the color of the chart and the strips looks. Therefore, effort should be made in this regard because the whole essence of the urine color chart is to compare the color with that of the strip for accurate result.

Laying the strip directly on the chart could harm the urine color chart by soiling it in a way that the color becomes affected. It is important to take this into account during use in order to preserve the urine color chart for future use.

Note that color blind people are not expected to use the urine color chart as so many colors will look the same. Ensure you are qualified to use the urine color chart in order to obtain an accurate result.

Abnormal color of urine indicates danger to health. For example, pink to reddish urine color suggests that there may be blood in your urine, sign of kidney disease, urinary tract infections, prostrate problems or something else. This is dangerous. When this is noticed, it is important to consult the doctor immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment.

A syrup or brown ale color could indicate a liver disease or dehydration in a very severe form. The first solution to this will be to drink enough water to see if it clears off. However, if the color remains, it is important to see your doctor immediately.

Colors such as pale straw, transparent yellow indicates a normal, healthy and well hydrated system while a dark yellow or amber color indicates a normal system but with less hydration.
