Picture this: you have just downloaded a large PDF file that contains vital information that will help you write up your annual report at work. With the deadline fast approaching, you cannot afford to go through the whole document to find the piece of information you are looking for. You instead opt to search for keywords that will take you to the exact page where the information is located. But when you search the PDF file, you get no hits, even when you can physically locate the keywords in the text.
So, what do you do in such situations? There are two methods you can use to circumvent the issue. If the file looks like it was scanned or is the result of an image file, you can use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on selected PDF tools to make it searchable. Alternatively, you can open the file with a PDF editor and save it as a new searchable PDF file. Below is an instruction on how to convert PDF to searchable PDF.

After installation, launch PDFelement. Select "Open" to upload your problematic PDF file. With the file uploaded, you can now search the contents by clicking the Search button on the left side. Now you can enter the text and click the Start Search button. The search results will be displayed immediately. Click the target item to jump to the corresponding page.
If the file you are dealing with originated from a scan or image, you will need to OCR to successfully search the contents of the file. When you launch PDFelement, upload the file using the brief procedure described above. Then you will be prompted to activate OCR as soon as the document is uploaded. Click "Perform OCR" when prompted to activate this feature.
With OCR activated, the contents of your scanned PDF file will be read, enabling you to edit, search, and carry out other modifications on the document as you see fit. You can use the file as is within the program to search for text.
