How to Redact Scanned PDF Files

Redaction is technically depriving the public of certain parts or portions of a piece of document, whether it be a work sample included in an online portfolio or recently decalcified matter-of-national-security type of documents, corporation reports, bank statements, utility bills or simply an essay part or parts of which must be either hidden or removed before an official, final publication. There are many ways to redact a piece of document. This article focuses on how to redact scanned PDF files.

Part 2 The Method for Redacting a Scanned PDF Document

Step1. Load PDF into PDFelement

Launch PDFelement after finagling the installation. Open your PDF document in the program by clicking the "Open" button (For Mac, it's the "Open File" button).

Note: The program will automatically detect the scanned PDF, OCR it if you want to search and redact specific words. If not, proceed with the next step.

Step 2. Mark Text in Scanned PDF

Under the "Protect" tab, choose "Mark for Redaction". Now hover the cursor on the line/lines of text, image, object etc. and draw the rectangle over the desired area. Right-click on the rectangle and choose "Properties". On the opened bar, you can change box color and customize overlay text.

On Mac: Move to the "Redaction" button at the top right. Click on the "Arrow" icon next to it and on the opened up tab choose "Mark for Redaction". Go to your page and choose items of the document you want redacted and draw the rectangle. Click the redaction area and then customize it on the right side.

Step 3. Apply Redaction to Scanned PDF PDF

When you are happy with the results, choose the Protect tab and click on "Apply Redactions" button. A window pops up warning you once the document is saved, the changes cannot be undone. Click "OK".

On Mac: Once you are happy with your customization, you can apply the redactions by choosing the "Apply Redactions" button under the "Redaction" button.
