How to Redact Text in PDF Files

Redaction is the process of deleting or hiding the important or private information from a document. The process of redacting text in a PDF document is mostly used in the law firms, pharmaceutical organizations or the research. However, some people can use it to hide their name, address while the organizations mostly use it to delete the sensitive information. Note: Copy the PDF file that is to be redacted, into a new folder or any folder that you deem convenient. The information or data that is to be redacted must be overviewed carefully and with full consideration. For example, the redacted information might include any driving license numbers or any identity card numbers. Moreover, this may include any specific names of individuals or organizations, or any trade secrets like codes, formulas etc.

Step 1. Open the File You Want to Redact

Launch Wondershare PDFelement and click "Open" to import the PDF file that is to be redacted. After you have opened the file, review the document thoroughly, for finding information that is to be redacted.

Step 2. Mark Text for Redaction

On the top menu, click on the "Protect" tab. Then click on the Mark for Redaction option and hover the cursor over to the lines or texts or any material that you want to redact. You can right click on the redaction area and choose "Properties" to change its appearance.

Step 3. Confirm the Redaction

For multiple words and information, you can click the "Search & Redact". This will open up a side screen on the left. Type the words that are to be redacted and press the Search icon. This will automatically search for all the same words in the PDF file. Tick the results that you have to redact and then click on "Apply All Marks option".

Step 4. Save Your Redacted PDF

After marking the text, go to the Protect tab, and select "Apply Redactions". A pop-up screen will appear. By pressing "OK", the information will be blacked out or redacted. Finally go to "File > Save" to save your document.
