How to Search Text in PDF for Redaction

People often assume redaction involves placing an opaque block over text and images to hide the content. While the hidden content cannot be viewed in plain sight, the hidden text can easily be accessed by copying and pasting the blacked-out text to another program. Businesses and individuals alike stand to lose a lot when the integrity of sensitive information cannot be guaranteed. It is, therefore, important for you to understand how to redact text properly using the right tools. In this article, I will tell you how to search text in PDF for redaction.

Part 2How to Search and React Text in PDF File

The application is also multiplatform, which means you can download PDFelement for Windows and Mac OS X. The following step-by-step guide shows you how to search and remove sensitive, recurring text in confidential PDF documents using Wondershare PDFelement.

Step 1. Launch PDFelement and Import PDF

Launch PDFelement once the installation is complete. The "Open" button on the Home window will allow you to upload a PDF file from your computer. You can also drag and drop the file to redact onto the window.

For Mac users, you can click the "Open File" button to import your PDF from local folder.

Step 2. Select Text for Redaction

On the top menu bar, click the "Protect" tab followed by "Search & Redact". On the left side window, enter the word or phrase then click on the small "Magnifying Glass" icon to begin searching. The words or phrases that have been found will be listed and you will get a chance to select all entries that apply.

For Mac users, click the "Arrow" icon next to the "Redaction" button on the top right corner. Then choose "Search & Redact" from the submenu. The Search window will appear on the left. Enter the phrases or words to replace and then click "Search & Redact".

Step 3. Apply Redactions to Selected Text

Once all relevant entries have been selected, click on "Apply All Marks" and click "OK" on the pop-up dialogue box to confirm. This will black out all selected entries on your document. To save the file, select "File > Save As" and select an appropriate file name.

For Mac users, from the results that you get, select the ones you want to redact and select "Mark Checked Results for Redaction" at the bottom.
