How to Perform Data Redaction on PDF

Data Redaction in a PDF file means protecting or deleting the sensitive text, image, graphs or any other confidential material in the PDF file. If you are sending a letter to a general population or a legal notice to someone, you might want to black out something on the page. Redaction in the PDF file is equal to blacking out the data on hard copy using a black marker or something else. By using the redaction in PDF file, you will not have to print documents or scanned them later after removing confidential information. Moreover, users will also be able to add custom or redaction code on the blacked out text to show what is removed. In this article, I will tell you how to redact data in PDF files.

Step 1. Open Your PDF File

Launch Wondershare PDFelement from desktop on your computer. Click on the "Open" button and select the PDF file that you want to edit, you can also drag and drop the PDF file onto the program's interface.

If you are using a Mac, click on the "Open File" button on the Home window or click on the "File > Open". Now, select the PDF file in which you want to redact the data.

Step 2. Redact Sensitive Data

Navigate to the top tab menu and click on "Protect" and then select "Mark for Redaction". The next step is to select the data that you want to redact. Use your touchpad to highlight the area that you want to redact.

On Mac: Click on the little "Arrow" icon next to the "Redaction" button which is present on the top right bar and select "Mark for Redaction". Now, select the data that you want to redact, using the touchpad of your Mac.

Step 3. Edit Redaction Properties

After selecting the area, right click the redaction mark and select "Properties". The redacting properties will be opened on the right side of the screen where you can change the filling color. In order to add text to the redaction area, check the "Overlay Text" and add custom text in the field. Once you have redacted the area or added text on it, click on "Apply Redactions" in the same upper tab.

On Mac: Once you have selected the data, it will automatically open the Properties window on the right side of your screen where you can change the filling color, custom text or using the redaction codes on your PDF file.
