How to Lock PDF with Passwords

PDF documents are popular nowadays and are used in different industries. With the electronic file, it is easy to share information across all online platforms. However, the type of content being shared, some could be top secret while other could just be open to the public. The sensitive documents need to be made private by including passwords or any security feature. In this article, you will learn how to lock PDF with passwords and permissions.

This process is similar to putting a lock on your house. Apart from passwords, you will need to secure your PDF with certificates. There are two ways by which you can lock a PDF:

Step 1. Open PDF

After downloading and installation on, you then need to import the PDF that you want to protect. To do this, you can use the "Open" button on the bottom left corner of the Home window and navigate, through the pop-up window, and click "Open" to load it.

When using Mac, from the Home window, you can click the "Open File" button on the bottom right. It will lead you to your computer where you can search for the PDF document.

Step 2. Make PDF File Locked

When the PDF is open in PDFelement, Click "Protect > Password" and check the "Require a password to open the document" box. When it opens up type your password and confirm. To change permission, you will have to check the "Require a password to change security settings and access specific functions" box. Then finalize by typing your password and confirm - you now restrict from printing and editing.

When using PDFelement for Mac, click and expand the "Protection" tool option on the right side menu, from which you will click on the "Encrypt with Password" option. There are various security methods to choose from such as require a password to pen the document or restrict editing and printing of the document.
